Top Five Outside Dining Locations for a Night Out

Indoor dining has been replaced by having your afternoon or evening meal alfresco and Stowe has headed that call by creating fanciful, wide-open outdoor spaces that are as much a delight as the quality, locally-sourced ingredients used to prepare dishes that have elevated Stowe to national acclaim and crowned “#1 Ski Town for Foodies in the United States” by Fodor’s Travel.  Let’s take a look at the “Top Five” visitor favorites in no particular order, as each is a unique experience unlike any other and a celebration of well-being, relaxation and satisfaction to be shared with family, friends and loved ones.

The Matterhorn Bar and Grille

Dining in Stowe, Vermont

The local’s go-to and the first drinking & dining establishment as you head south after a day on the challenging ski slopes or backcountry hiking trails of majestic Mount Mansfield, The Matterhorn Bar and Grille is truly an all-season destination that you must experience.  Since 1950, this world-renowned bar which boasts a classic alpine vibe has attracted the likes of Ethan Hawke, Harvey Keitel and Snoop Dogg and was recently voted #1 après-ski bar in North America.  Set against the backdrop of the snow-fed Little River, their “Riverside Dining” area is perfect for those seeking to dine mere steps away from the rushing waters while enjoying some of the best Sushi and Wood Fired Pizza in all of Stowe.

Stowe Cider

What was once just a production facility and distribution center for fresh-pressed hard cider, Stowe Cider now boasts an expanded outdoor taproom, cider garden and live music Thursday thru Saturday in their sculpture-laden backyard space.  While they do not serve food per se, they do have onsite offerings from their “Street Food Cart” during those nights with the other four evenings left for those with friends and loved ones wishing to experience a “Safety Meeting”, or perhaps something a bit lighter such as their new craft seltzer, “Rose Spritz”, as they share in outside food as the street food cart is closed.  What could be better than a crisp, dry hard cider as you enjoy a picnic of scotch eggs, fresh bread sandwiches, sausage rolls and quiche under the late summer sun?

Tres Amigos

Just steps from Stowe’s famed Recreation Path, an 11-mile paved “greenway” winding from the picturesque village to near the base of Vermont’s highest peak and enjoyed by walkers, runners and cyclists, Tres Amigos now offers a reimagined outdoor cantina for your al fresco dining enjoyment.  It’s a great place to take a break midway through your rec path adventure and cool off with a house-favorite “Smoke on the Water” maple syrup-infused margarita or perhaps devour a platter of “Maple Habanero Wings”—or both!  Kid-friendly, family-friendly, socially distanced-friendly–there’s even an authentic on-premise Vermont creemee stand!  It’s all new and better than ever at everyone’s favorite Mexican-inspired eatery.

Idletyme Brewing Company

What started as a cider mill and evolved as the years went by into a gas station, youth hostel, variety store, tennis camp and finally the legendary Shed Restaurant, Idletyme Brewing Company is now home to good food and drink as well as Stowe’s premier outdoor dining experience.  What do you get when you combine a plein-air bar, oversized firepit, lush fauna, live music, traditional outdoor lawn games and the aforementioned locally sourced food and libations?  The perfect spot to meet friends, both old and new, chat and enjoy the best outdoor culinary scene in the heart of Stowe.  Also on the “rec path” and overlooking the tranquil waters of the West Branch River, Idletyme is not to be missed.

Harrison’s Restaurant

Located in charming, historic Stowe village and offering patio dining in a casual yet upscale, relaxing environment, Harrison’s Restaurant is the spot to see and be seen.  Family-owned and family-run, you are always among friends at Harrison’s with their intimate setting perfectly suited for a romantic date night, meeting friends while relaxing over hand-crafted cocktails or enjoying any number of traditional chef-created entrees sure to please both young and those a few years wiser.  Enjoying local and seasonal favorites while laughing and reminiscing with loved ones as you unwind and leave your cares behind.  However, be sure to leave some room for their acclaimed homemade Profiteroles which you can walk off later as you stroll enchanting Main Street!
