Plan a Staycation in Stowe VT

Whether you are already in the Green Mountain State, or a few hours’ drive away, there is still time to plan a fun family getaway and take a much-needed winter break!

Plan for a long weekend or a week-long vacation, hop in the car, and head to Vermont’s winter playground where you can get away from the daily grind without having to go very far.

Fun On and Off the Slopes

Stowe Mountain Resort – this is the main attraction for lovers of winter sports and it doesn’t disappoint! Stowe Mountain Resort offers world class downhill skiing and riding but also has tons of other winter activities to choose from like ice skating, snowshoeing, and indoor rock climbing. You can usually save a little extra by pre-purchasing tickets online.

Trapp Family Lodge – the resort, founded and built by the Von Trapp family, offers plenty of fun activities in a beautiful setting. Snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, kids’ sing-alongs, nature walks, and carriage rides are some of the opportunities available to combat cabin fever. In recent years they’ve also added an on-site brewery and beer hall that serves up traditional Austrian fare so you can leave the cooking to someone else for a while. Located on the grounds is also one of our favorite places to visit – Slayton Pasture Cabin, an off-the-grid rustic cabin that serves hot food and drinks to skiers and snowshoers. No Wi-Fi and plenty of good company!

Spa Days! – If your vacation isn’t complete without a little pampering (and why should it be?) Stowe is the right place to visit. There are plenty of options to completely relax and enjoy a spa day. Favorite spots include Stowe Mountain Lodge and Stoweflake Mountain Resort and Spa. Stowe Mountain Lodge even has a special kids’ spa with mini-treatments designed just for younger ones.

Explore – Plan a day to visit another side of Stowe, VT that doesn’t always make it into the travel magazines. The Stowe Free Library has always been a favorite spot for our family, as has the Vermont Ski and Snowboard Museum and Helen Day Art Center. No trip to Stowe is complete without a few hours set aside to explore Bear Pond Books, a local independent bookstore that invites visitors to get lost for a while.

Evening Entertainment

Vacation time means you can stay out a little later and sleep in the next day! A few places to have fun after dark and enjoy some entertainment are Stowe Cinema and Spruce Peak for the Performing Arts.

We are also partial to our own Stowe Bowl, where you can have a fun-packed evening, don some stylin’ shoes, feast on delicious food, try some of our favorite drinks at the bar, and enjoy a little friendly competition!

Keep it Simple

Planning a staycation should be as easy as taking one. It’s great when your hotel or other accommodations offer on-site amenities that mean you can keep everyone entertained without having to go too far or think too much!
