Dreaming of a Cozy Winter in Stowe, Vermont

As the leaves fall and the weather grows colder here in Stowe, Vermont we are dusting off our snow boots and pulling out the winter jackets. When you live or travel to the Northeast, you learn to be prepared. In our October issue of our Sun & Ski Inn and Suites blog we like to help you, our guest, plan ahead for a great winter vacation with us.

While many people know us as a downhill ski destination there are many different winter experiences that both locals and visitors have come to love in Stowe. When the snow covers our town in a soft blanket of white snow it looks so beautiful that you want to capture it in a picture and hang it on a wall. In fact, many painters and photographers have done just that.

What is it about this timeless town that captures the hearts of so many? There probably isn’t one answer. It is certainly a combination of the sites, sounds, smells and feelings that a Stowe experience leaves you with. Especially in the winter a feeling of coziness comes to mind. Our family’s Dutch ancestors use a word to describe this – “gezelligheid”. The simplest translation is “cozy” but it is really about much more than your surrounding atmosphere. It’s also about the people you are connecting with in that experience that gives you a warm feeling.

Imagine that picture hanging on the wall. What are the people doing? Most locals will agree that an ideal day lives up to the imagination of what it might be like. We spend a lot of time outdoors enjoying any one of our winter activities and end the day warming up with loved ones.

We welcome you to visit us this winter at the Sun & Ski Inn and Suites in Stowe, Vermont. Along with our neighbors, we work hard to share this little piece of heaven with you.

Downhill skiing is a favorite but do not forget about snowshoeing, Nordic skiing and fat biking.

Check out Umiak Outfitters for gear and guided excursions

Nordic Skiing

Trapp Family Lodge is hands down our favorite Nordic skiing location in Stowe. If we are lucky with fresh snow fall and grooming, the Stowe Recreation Path across the street from us is a great no-cost option.

Fat Biking

This is a growing winter sport activity in Stowe. We recommend checking out Ranch Camp for information and bike rentals.

Gear and Clothing

Whether you purchase or rent winter gear and clothing, being prepared can make the difference between an okay and out of this world experience. We are excited that Pinnacle Sports has recently moved across the street from us, providing a new convenience for our guests.

Rental equipment, clothing and accessories: Pinnacle Sports across the street from the Sun & Ski Inn and Suites. AJ’s Ski & Sports is also a great option. They also have rentals and we love their leisure winter clothing and accessories.

Rental clothing and gear: If you don’t have your own winter clothing and accessories and don’t wish to purchase, Kit Lender is a great option.

Traveling

Car

Most of Stowe offers free parking. Parking can be difficult at Stowe Mountain Resort during certain days and time periods. We highly recommend all-wheel drive vehicles and winter tires.

Mountain Road Shuttle

The shuttle stops conveniently in front of our hotel and runs every 15 to 30 minutes during the day and evening hours from December through March. This is a great option for those coming by plane to Burlington, VT or for families that like to split up to different activities around town. It is also good for those very busy days when the Stowe Mountain Resort parking lot is very full. Download the Transit App for real time bus location and schedules. Or find a pdf schedule (coming soon) for the Stowe Mountain Road Shuttle here.
